Barry Rudd wins Maple Creek election

Barry Rudd has won the Maple Creek election, beating incumbent mayor Anne Weisgerber by a large number.
“I think the people voted for change. The people wanted change and I guess I stepped up to the plate. I was there, I voiced my opinion and I tried to run my election platform on being open and honest,” said Rudd.

Town administrator Mark Caswell called Rudd at home and while he didn’t provide the exact numbers, Caswell told Rudd he had won by a sizeable margin. The town reportedly ran out of ballots at approximately 5 p.m., after which time photocopies were made. There were 700 ballots available and Caswell believed prior to the election that 700 would be enough. Voter turnout in the last election was approximately 300.
The new mayor-elect says he is proud of his campaign and of Weisgerber’s as well.
“Anne ran a clean election and I would like to believe that I did too. We’ve always had a good working relationship in the political sense, you agree to disagree, but life goes on when you walk out the door.”
Rudd says Weisgerber was committed to serving the town during her years of public office.
“Anne has put her heart and soul into it and she accomplished a lot.”
Rudd says he can’t wait to get started. The mayor-elect will likely be sworn in at the first council meeting in November.
He says his first task will be to sit down with council, administration and staff, a job Rudd says he’s excited to begin.
“Yes, I am. Now that it’s here, I’m very excited really.”
He thanked the voters of Maple Creek for what certainly appears could be a record turnout.
“The people and the support I was given since February right until now has been unbelievable.”
The precise numbers aren’t yet known, and the winning councillors have not yet been announced.
Further updates will be posted as they become available.
Results have not yet been released for school board elections. The official result will come tomorrow at 9 a.m.
If the Badger learns anything earlier, you’ll be the first to know.

While I am dissappointed (but not surprised) in the mayoral race results, am proud to see the voter turnout. Let’s hope we have a council that can now – heads up, eyes wide open – voice their opinions, stand up for what they truly believe in and vote within chamber accordingly. It is my hope that we have council members with not only conviction but courage, that are ready and willing to “strap on a set” when they need too. Let’s not loose the momentum we’ve gained and let’s build on the recent interest in local government. My sincere thanks to Anne Weisgerber for her leadership, dedication, passion and committment to the people of Maple Creek. “Chin up” Anne, job well done. We’ve lost an honourable public servant. My congratulations to Barry Rudd. While I’ve been public in my criticism regarding his conduct and comments, I recognize and accept whole heartedly that two thirds of the voting public asked for a change in leadership and saw Mr. Rudd as the most desirable candidate. My sincere best wishes to you, Mr. Rudd and I look forward to hearing about your vision for our town. This is a community I am truly proud to call my home.

Thanks for the “early” news. It’s telling that you, out in Leader, have news about our town while we would only find out next Tuesday if we waited for the Maple Creek News-Times, that is, if we didn’t count coffee row. Kodos and we miss you.

Obviously it is not a sad day in Maple Creek when Rudd won by a “sizable margin”. There were some very poor decisions made in the past few years, which prompted change. I am very proud of him, and with his past experience I know he will do well. He has done a great job in his past career in management and he is a great person in general! Congratulations Barry and the elected councillors! Very well deserved!

ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maple Creek needs some kind of change! Hopefully this will help, but what about the rest of the “old geezers” on council who are affraid of change???????

Way to go Maple Creek, pleasantly surprised to see many out voting and becoming interested in our “small town” politics. There is nothing wrong with change and it is obvious to me that by the results the residents of Maple Creek were ready for that change, and made it.

Thank you so much Sheri for keeping us so very well informed. I was told today that not even the Town of Maple Creek website has any results official or otherwise. Good job and look very forward to working with you and your great newspaper in the future.

Although I’m sure the previous comment was posted as a compliment to the Badger’s (aka Sheri’s) prompt reporting, I thought I should make it known that the election results were posted on the Town’s website first thing this morning.

Anyone that waits until 15 minutes before the ballots close to throw their name in the ring for Mayor is either too much of a Drama Queen wanting attention or is too indecisive to do a good job!!!

At least I had the courage to put my name up on the nomination form and actually sign my comments !
