Maple Creek mayoral candidate Barry Rudd – also a current councillor – says he was surprised by a letter to the editor in the Oct. 22 edition of the Maple Creek News-Times. The letter, which harshly criticized Rudd less than a week from the Oct. 28 election, was penned by fellow councillor Dave Rowley – the only current council member not seeking re-election.

A poll conducted by The Badger over three consecutive days reveals the race for mayor of Maple Creek will be a tight one.
A total of 100 eligible voters were selected randomly and asked who they thought would win as mayor – Anne Weisgerber or Barry Rudd.
In total, 48 respondents said they thought Rudd will win, 27 believed Weisgerber would remain as mayor and 25 people were undecided.

The last regular meeting of the current Maple Creek council ended with a bang last night after an unexpected delegation was permitted to read a letter to council that attacked current councillor and mayoral candidate Barry Rudd on the eve of the election.

Overall enrolment is down again in Chinook School Division, with 17 less students in Southwest schools than at this time last year and some area schools experienced sharp declines in numbers. However, schools with far fewer children this year will likely be relieved to hear the school board will not initiate any review processes until 2010.

Maple Creek residents turned out in droves for an all-candidates forum held Oct. 19.
Organized by the Maple Creek Chamber of Commerce, approximately 200 people witnessed 13 of the 15 councillors posture for the popular vote.

Since the formation of Chinook School Division in 2006, many changes have been implemented, including technology upgrades, renovations to Maple Creek Composite High School, distance learning programs and streamlined policy for all schools.

“I’m running because I don’t like how things are getting run,” said Rodney Fairbrother of his bid to become a member of Chinook School Board. He will be running against incumbent Vance Sanderson in Zone 5, which includes Maple Creek and Consul.
