It was a sombre start to the Cypress Cyclones Oct. 1 season opener at Maple Creek as tribute was paid to team member Jamie Zubot with a moment of silence.
“One thing about Jamie, he was a real team guy,” said Cyclones head coach Blaine Stork.

Saskatchewan’s only major beef processing plant – XL Foods Inc. – has been closed since April. First, the temporary closure was attributed to a shortage of cull cows for slaughter. Now the workers at the plant have been locked out. They have been without a contract since January of this year.

Election action hot at Maple Creek, Leader

On Oct. 28, voters will head to the polls to elect a new urban municipal government in what promises to be an exciting race in many towns.
Nominations closed on Sept. 30 and after much speculation, Barry Rudd, councillor for Maple Creek, submitted his papers to run as mayor 15 minutes before the 4 p.m. deadline. He’ll be battling incumbent Anne Weisgerber.
Leader’s election does not include a race for mayor – Craig Tondevold will be returned by acclamation – but several new candidates …

Leader’s town council is at a stalemate in a game of property chess after a proposed downtown condo project failed. Without council’s knowledge or consent, a former administrator changed a development agreement and as a result, the town may have to pay thousands to reclaim control of a property it already owns.
