Starving dog found in Leader
By Sheri Monk
Jennifer Scory has always had a soft spot in her heart for animals. That’s why she collects donations for the SPCA at her Leader hair styling business, Salon J.
And that’s why she couldn’t refuse shelter to the starving dog delivered into her care Nov. 27.
A Leader resident found the miniature dachshund running the streets in town and it was in visibly poor condition.
“He was found by a lady in town that saw him running around on the road. She was told to bring him to me because I had something to do with the SPCA. As of Friday he was malnourished, dehydrated, but when he was dropped him off at the vet clinic he was definitely improving,” Scory said.
The identity of the animal’s owner is not clear and the dog is now in the care of the Leader Veterinary Clinic, awaiting pick-up by the SPCA, who are also expected to initiate an investigation into the matter.
“He does have an owner in town,” Scory added.
She says the dog was very hungry and thirsty, but still had a friendly disposition, though he appears to be somewhat frightened of men.
All the dog’s bones are pronounced, sticking up from its hide and the detail of each vertebrae of its spine is clearly visible.
“It was absolutely heartbreaking,” Scory said. “He was just a sweet little guy, a lovely little personality.”
While Leader and other rural communities in the Southwest are not home to an animal shelter, there are such facilities located at Medicine Hat and Swift Current. Any pet owner unable to care for an animal can call either location for advice on where and how to surrender their pet.
Some dog breeds, like the whippet and the greyhound have a naturally thin appearance. But regardless of breed, all dogs should have a layer of flesh or fat covering the rib bones and hip bones. While it is more common for pampered pets to become overweight, an emaciated dog – paticularly small breeds – can weaken quickly, which leads to death or serious medical complications.
A quick, novice check for dehydration can include grasping a fold of the dog’s skin and pulling it away from its body. If adequately hydrated, the skin will quickly fall back into place. The skin of dehydrated animals will slowly fall back down toward the body, indicating dehydration.

Wow. I didn’t know that Leader had a tabloid of it’s own. I was involved in this situation, and this story is almost completely inaccurate.
1) the dog had been missing.
2) the owner contacted Scoury the moment they found out where he was.
3) Scoury told the owners that they could pick up the dog the next day, then proceeded to contact RCMP, who looked into it, then instructed Scoury to release the dog to the owners (which she refused to do).
4)The owners contacted the RCMP who did a full investigation. The took the dog to the vet’s office and informed the owners to pick up the dog from there. (They found no reason for concern, although Scoury obviously didn’t share their sentiments.)
5)the dog is not with the SPCA… it is home where it belongs with it’s family.
I can only hope that the residents of Leader see through this; that family is now going to be harassed and ridiculed, regardless of the truth. The owner’s children will probably suffer the most from this one-sided fairy tale.
Since the entire article was nothing but an opinionated column, I sure hope that the editors leave this opinion here for the world to see.
I have lived in Leader most of my life, and I hope that I am not the only one bright enough to see exactly what this article is about – a self-righteous, meddling gossip exposing herself for what she really is.
The Badger will be publishing an update to this story, should new information become available. New information will be posted here as well as made available in the print edition of next week’s issue.
Hopefully, the family will come forward to explain that the dog was missing. The Badger does not know who the owners are, but would love to speak with them.
A call has been left with the RCMP and the SPCA. They have not yet been returned.
Also, it should be noted the article does not say the owners starved the dog, merely that it was found on the street, obviously starving.
If your dog was missing for 2 weeks wouldn’t you put up posters? Leader is pretty small and if this little dog were running around with pet tags on I am sure it would be returned home. I would also have a hard time returning a pet to it’s owners if I found it in that condition. I feed strays that look like show cats compared to the state that poor puppy was found in.
FYI, there is an update to this story and it will be published this evening.
Thanks for staying posted,
The Badger.
I read through this story, more than once, and for “seriously” I have only one question, do you have an inside source here that you`d like the rest of us to know about?? It doesn`t say anywhere at all in the article how long this dog was missing….
Before you go passing judgement on anyone else, gather all the facts, and keep your own doorstep clean, the best way to not look like a fool for passing judgement is to educate yourself, maybe next time give that a try before you point that judgemental finger of yours at anyone. If you are not careful you can find it pointing at you.
Eagerly awaiting the update, maybe all the readers will have both sides of this story and the gossip can finally be put to rest. Little towns are known to be like this, Leader is very obviously no different, but it`s not like that is shocking news, it`s been like that here for YEARS.
This is a reply to the first comment!!! Ok.. I have lived in Leader, Saskatchewan most of my life, and I can tell you that Jennefer Scory from Salon J is a complete angel from heaven for doing everything that she does!! She is confident, caring, and a well respected woman! Her choices throughout this whole thing were nothing but generous and giving! Anyone who knows her would not doubt her decisions for second!! So if you come from leader…and you are such a good hearted person to write the truth here, why don’t you tell us the truth why you didn’t step up to do everything you could to help out this little puppy? Oh that’s right…you must be one of those who would rather just run your mouth about something “you think you know about”!! I am very disgusted to see your comment, whoever you are! Obviously if you think it is wise for this dog to go back, it just shows exactly what type of person you are!! As animal owners, we have a responsibility to provide food, shelter, and water..as same goes to children!!…it is clear as day this poor innocent puppy was NOT provided with those needs!! Jennefer made the right choice to help this little pup…and ohh let me guess IF SHE DIDN’T HELP.. she would be a cold hearted, disgusting, and horrible person…WOULDN’T SHE?…hmm…which makes it CLEAR AS DAY.. that is what type of person you are, because you DID NOTHING to help…and the people of leader and everywhere reading this…I would hope will support Jen!!! Great job JEN you are a angel sent from heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I have to say is look at the picture of the dog. Something had to be done to save this little puppy! Thank you Jen for speaking for the ones who can’t.

Kudos to the first comment and “the ever optimist”…as for the rest of the gossip, I guess there is still one ace in the hole for you’s out there, the local Vet Clinic, RCMP and SPCA could be wrong all at the same time couldn’t they? Or maybe you should report them, too, since they don’t seem to “know what they are talking about”.
Well, good morning, “Disgusted”. First and foremost, I would like to let you know that I was present on Friday afternoon, and I did see the dog when it was brought to Scoury’s business (which I noticed was mentioned in the article – nice bit of free advertising). I, too, was concerned about him, but unlike the rest of you, I chose to find out more before I jumped to conclusions. My next thought was that if Scoury was so worried about the animal, why would she keep him at her store all afternoon, and wait so long to seek real professional attention? It was Saturday before I learned of the other side of the situation, and not surprisingly, it did not correspond with the rumors Scoury and her friends had already been spreading.
I read the new article, and I am pleased to say, “Disgusted”, that you should be “disgusted” with yourself, and with Scoury and everyone else for “running your mouths” about something you knew nothing about. I know that I am “disgusted” with all of you. If Scoury really was “an angel”, she would have displayed quite a lot more tact, and respect of the owners’ privacy, until the investigations by the proper authorities were complete. I also was witness to Scoury’s postings on her Facebook account and would like to add “No, Jen. Shame on YOU”.
“Thankful”, I would hope that you are now eating your words because that “poor little puppy” did not need saving; he simply needed to go home.
To the “Ever Optimist”. You, my dear, are absolutely right, and you underline my point. This group of people are obviously assuming that everything Scoury says is truth; as I mentioned before, I have lived here most of my life, and I know her better than that. Although she may have thought she was doing the right thing, she was wrong. When someone calls to claim their pet, you release that pet to, and let the authorities deal with it. You do not take matters into your own hands, nor should you spread nasty rumors or assumptions to ruin the owner’s credibility and reputation.
“Gossip Silencer”, you make a good point. I suppose what Scoury and her friends are trying to say is that our local veterinarian, our RCMP officers, and the Swift Current SPCA are incapable of conducting investigations. Perhaps Scoury should look into having them investigated as well.
The pain and suffering that Scoury and everyone else has caused that family is irreversible, and I hope that they are able to move past it without too many harsh feelings toward our community.
One note to all the Jen Scory devotees, recently she was advised of two cats who have been sited by several people in town and are assumed strays, and her response was “I`ll keep my ears open for you”. This is the response from the one who claims to have a soft spot in her heart for animals and couldn`t resist the “starving dog”.
If she is so devoted to caring for the ones who cannot speak for themselves, and she will do whatever she has to why has she decided to do NOTHING about the two cats she has known about for the past 3 days. Something just doesn`t add up here.
What makes this situation worse is that she has been in contact with the SPCA officer from Swift Current who was in Leader on Wednesday this week and said NOTHING once again.
This information has angered me again, and maybe now her true colors can be seen for everyone. If you happen to be in her shop dropping off a donation for the SPCA why not ask her the reason for her “selective”concern for animals.
It sounds to me like she had a personal vendetta against the family who owned the dog, not a genuine concern for ALL animals. Or will she only kick up a fuss and spread lies when she knows who she is hurting.
OMG, just look a the pictures. Pictures are worth thousand words. The dog was brought to Jen because of the shape he was in, and the fact that she does have contact with the SPCA. I strongly believe that she did everything in her power to help this dog. Who wouldn’t? The state that, that dog was in, you would believe that it was being miss treated, of course now the dog looks good, it’s had food and water for the last 5 days. Give it up, your just trying to cover it up.
To the “Ever Optimist”,
I thank you for sharing that information with the rest of us. I think that it is important to give a background and updates on the person who has made outrageous claims and accusations of the owners of the dog. If she really did have a deep concern for all animals, I am forced to wonder exactly why Scoury did not “rescue” these kittens? They are wandering out in the cold, with no warm home waiting for them; meanwhile, when the owner contacted Scoury, she made it clear to her “devotees” that she was doing the “right thing” by keeping him with her to “protect” him from those “terrible” people. I agree that it sounds as if Scoury simply has no interest in helping any animals, unless it gives her an opportunity to create an illusion of superiority over another known member of our community. Definitely the actions of a true “angel”.
It concerns me, also, that Scoury stated in the new article that she had spoken with the SPCA officer on Wednesday, and yet she failed to mention the poor starving, freezing kittens. I am a true animal lover, and had I been made aware of those darlings, I would have taken them in myself. Since Scoury has decided not to take action in this, it is obvious that she must not have such a burning desire to “help those who cannot speak for themselves” unless it serves her in some way. I will be calling the Swift Current SPCA, asking for a pick up for those poor kittens (who, might I add, are in REAL danger). If anyone knows the location of their whereabouts, or if a “TRUE” animal lover has already taken them in, please post an update so that those of us who don’t have ulterior motives can step in to help.
To the residents of Leader: If you have not been able to understand the reality of the situation up until now, perhaps this will open your eyes to what Scoury’s actions were really all about. It had little to do with the fact that she was concerned, but was based on her selfish desire to “prove” that she was better than someone else. Her track record will confirm this observation.
Those two cats better not be strays…
Hey! The pictures were taken as soon as the dog was found, before Jen had given him food and water…. of course he looked awful! The number to the Saskatchewan SPCA is 1-877-382-7722… you should let them know that the Swift Current SPCA can’t seem to figure out a case of animal abuse, even though they have been doing these investigations for years. Then you should also call the RCMP head office at 613-993-7269, and report the Leader detachment for the same thing. After that, call the Saskatchewan Veterinary Association at 306-955-7862 and let them know that even though our vet saw the dog on Friday, he still released the dog to the owners. And while your at it, call the Medicine Hat SPCA at 403-526-7722… since the Swift Current location doesn’t know how to do their jobs… and let them know about the kittens that Jen doesn’t seem to have a soft spot for. If the dog had been really starving, he would not have made such a quick recovery, and if he had been abused, why would he be so fond of his owners? Get your head out of your @$$ and quit listening to your friend’s gossip. You’re only making it worse for her and for yourself.
I am sitting here scratching my head and truly wondering how narrowminded people have really become.
In the article it clearly states that Jen Scory has always had a soft spot for animals which is why she couldn`t refuse shelter to the starving dog brought to her.
Her soft spot for animals is pretty selective, or she would have used her SPCA CONNECTIONS to have the cats picked up, who, even if they are strays, do not deserve to be left out in the cold, the SPCA does not care if they are someone`s pet or strays, the true ” angels sent from Heaven” take in animals regardless of where they came from.
For “Enough” You would only make conclusions like that if that is the type of person you are by nature. Not all of us jump the gun and point fingers, the majority of us will use our heads and ask the question that first came to my mind when I saw the pictures, and that is a simple question, WHY does he look that way?
He could be a stray, he could be lost, he could have a medical condition, who knows, but unless you are a veterinairian, or someone otherwise trained in areas of recognizing true neglect or abuse, shut your mouth and use your head, unless it is so far up your butt that you can`t think clearly.
I have done rescue work when I lived in another province, and the first thing that you are taught is to not pass judgement or make assumptions, if you truly care about the animal then you do what is best for the animal, it is not up to you to be judge, jury and executioner of the animals owners, there are authorities trained for that specific purpose. Why not let them deal with it, they are far better educated than the rest of us.
Most people, will, by human nature, draw a conclusion based on what we see, however, not all of us run to the paper to blast someone we don`t know BEFORE we have all the details. And for the vast majority of us when the RCMP tells you to shut up, it is in your very best interest to do just that.
Jen has not done anything wrong, Nor have I, she has done everything within the law.
