Leader recreation report

Recreation Director, Leader
Old Man Winter opened his freezer doors this month but it hasn’t stopped or discouraged the community’s Christmas spirit as many of public have been busy taking part in several of the community activities and events that have been planned throughout this month.
The Western Senior Citizens Home facilitated the second Annual Community Hymn-Sing on December 2. Community members came out in full support to bring in the season with songs of celebration and remembrance. Over 35 adults and children participated in singing the beautiful Christmas carols and one could hear the sweet harmonies throughout the building as participants sang the old Christmas favourites. The children had fun as they danced to the music and the rhythm of the jingle bells. Debbie Bueckert led the singing and Sandra Elsasser played the tunes. It was a great time for everyone to sing the old-tyme Christmas carols and socialize with the members of the home.
The downtown businesses continued the Christmas spirit with the Santa Night they hosted on December 3. Christmas specials, hayrides, singing of Christmas carols and a visit with Santa were just of few of the activities happening downtown that evening.
The Winter Fun Day was held at the arena on December 20. Participants had a chance to skate with Santa, take a ride on the horse-drawn hayride or do a craft in the arena lobby. The day ended with goodie bags distributed by Santa. A great time was enjoyed by all.
The arena activities will slow down somewhat during the weeks of December 22 to January 4. Therefore, a special holiday schedule has been prepared so the community will have plenty of public skating and scrimmage times throughout the holiday time. Please see the schedule in this week’s paper. You will notice that an adult supervisor is required for many of these times so please call the town office at 628-3860 if you would like to volunteer for any of these time periods.
The Recreation Department is now preparing for the second Annual Family Fun Night which will be held at the Leader Community Hall on the eve of December 31. All are invited to come out and enjoy the fun and activities planned during this alcohol-free event. Activities begin at 5:30 pm with a community potluck supper and a family dance will start off the evening’s activities at 7 p.m. There will be activities and fun for all ages so bring Grandma and Grandpa along too. Costs are $5 per person or $15 per family and party favours are included in the price.
The new year is fast approaching and the Recreation Department has many sports programs and activities planned for 2010. Watch for more details on upcoming programs such as boxing, yoga, line dancing and social dance. Indoor soccer and the walking club will be cancelled over the holidays, but will resume on January 4. Please call the town office if you would like more information about any of these activities.
To each and every one of you, a very Merry Christmas and all the best in 2010. I remind everyone to get involved and stay active!
