Billy Crystal Preparing Songs about ‘Argo’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Oscar Snubs “Just in Case”

January 11, 2013

HOLLYWOOD, CA (TheBadgerCA) – Most in the movie business ponder their completed work of the year when hearing the announcement of the nominees for the annual Oscarä awards.  Many wonder what more they could have done to improve work for the recognition, and a select few ponder the possibility of being able to “thank The Academy” for their selection.  But for most the work is done.

Crystal: “Don’t worry. I got this.”

Not so for Billy Crystal.  The nine-time host of the awards has been working diligently on jokes and songs since the 2013 award nominees were read by ceremony host Seth MacFarlane (the first host to announce the nominees since Charlton Heston in 1972) and actor Emma Stone.

MacFarlane made a joke about former dictator Adolf Hitler following the announcement of the “Best Foreign Film” category nominees.  It was at that point, Crystal says he picked up his pen.

“Seriously, when you see a guy standing in front of the press and he drops a ‘Hitler’ gag, you have to wonder if you’re going to get a call.  So, I’ve been working on some hosting things.  Nothing major, you know.  A joke here.  A song parody there.  Just stuff to bide the time, just in case the phone rings and we’ve got another Eddie (Murphy) on our hands.”  Eddie Murphy was supposed to host the 2012 awards when he pulled out allowing Crystal to host for the ninth time.

“I’ve got some things up my sleeve,” continued Crystal on his ongoing work.  “I mean, there’s this parody I’m doing for ‘Argo’ to the tune of ‘Key Largo’ by Bertie Higgins, I’m sure everyone will remember that song.  And for ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, I’m thinking of doing that to an air guitar of Ted Nugent’s ‘Cat Scratch Fever’.  That could work.  Nothing’s written in stone just yet, but it’s getting there.  Are people still talking about Dave (Letterman)’s ‘Uma’/’Oprah’ thing?  Maybe that’s something.”

MacFarlane was unavailable for comment.
