TORONTO, ON (TheBadgerCA) – With the announcement of the Toronto Raptors finalizing the deal that would bring Rudy Gay to the squad, controversy in Toronto abounded with the move. To acquire Gay, Toronto traded point guard Jose Calderon, power forward Ed Davis, a second round draft pick as well as cash to the Memphis Grizzles for Gay and centre Hamed Haddadi.
Many in Toronto are still debating the merits of the trade; still others seem to be slightly confused. From her Twitter account, Westboro Baptist Church member Shirley Phelps-Roper announced that she and members of her congregations were going to mobilize, sending demonstrators to Gay’s first game tonight to protest his inclusion in the squad.
Raid Phelps-Roper’s tweet, “Toronto has no right going against God’s will with this action. We will pcket [sic] this gay [sic] to promote Gods [sic] will.”
There has been no official response from Gay or the Toronto Raptors organization on the matter. A spokesman close to Gay came out stating “Rudy remains focussed and ready for the upcoming game. He only wishes that none of the church members have seats.”
