Hazlet is a small community of just over 70 people, but it’s a village with a big dream, founded in large part by a proactive school principal. Recently, the community realized its pioneering international student program was nixed by the school division. And if keeping a rural community alive was at the heart of the program, then finances are most certainly the guts of the problem.

When husband and wife doctor team Gul Jawaz and Naheed Amin moved to Canada from Saudi Arabia in 2007, neither had any idea their chances of actually practising medicine again were slim.
“We landed as immigrants in 2007 and we came to live here in May of 2008,” Amin explained. “We had applied for our immigration in 2004, we got it in 2007.”

At the last school board meeting before the Oct. 28 election, the outgoing Chinook School Board changed its school review policy.
The decision was made at the Oct. 13 meeting to conduct school reviews once every three years, rather than on an annual basis.
The first review period is to take place next year, the second year of the new board’s three-year mandate.

The story begins in the mid-1940s when a long stretch of Highway No. 32 between Shackleton and Leader was paved – sort of. No one knows for sure who decided how the highway would be constructed, but that decision resulted in a 65-year struggle which will finally cease in the fall of 2010.
