Gov of Sask news release
The Trans-Canada Highway in southwest Saskatchewan has re-opened to traffic following recent flooding in the area.
“In many cases our crews and contractors have been working full-out and around the clock to get this important highway re-opened,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. “I sincerely thank them for their outstanding effort.”
Motorists are advised that Highway 1 will now operate as a two-lane highway for about 3 km. For west-bound traffic, the two-lane section starts about 2 km west of the Highway 21 junction. For east-bound traffic, ...

Though now recognized as having their own distinct culture and status, it wasn’t always that way for the Métis people of Canada. Last week, Fort Walsh National Historic Site, in conjunction with Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, commemorated the Métis peoples of Canada and their contribution to the Southwest.
”This was part of celebrating 2010 as the Year of the Métis in Saskatchewan. This event was really just one part of an entire week of celebrations and here. It was called The Hills Are Alive,” explained Dominique Liboiron, interpretation officer ...

Awarded Citizen of the Year by the town of Leader for 2009, Bill Clary is no stranger to volunteerism, or activism. In 2007, he ran against Wayne Elhard in the provincial election under the Green party banner and in 2008, he ran for the national Green Party against Conservative David Anderson. But now, he is leading the charge in Leader to buck the rigid rules and regulations of the healthcare system. Rules he believe are causing the temporary closure of his hometown hospital.

It was a scary morning for Maple Creek’s Betty Braithwaite last Thursday, May 27, 2010. The fire department was called to the 7 a.m. fire at Cypress View Trailer Park.

Braithwaite escaped without injury, but her home sustained extensive damage as a result of the fire, believed to have been caused by the furnace.
The Maple Creek Fire Department quickly had the blaze under control, but hot spots in the attic forced the crew to cut several holes through the roof to quiet the activity.

Approximately 400 people attended a meeting at the Leader Community Hall May 27 to learn about the loss of the community’s use of the hospital.
As of May 31, the hospital will not provide emergency services, accept admissions or remain open 24 hours per day. Instead, it will be open during business hours for pre-booked services such as dressing changes, blood pressure checks, etc., as well as lab and X-ray services. Home care, community health services and long-term care are unaffected by the changes.

The closure of the hospital is ...

At the rodeo, a spectator was heard asking, “What’s that bright light in the sky?” when the sun finally came out. Others were making jokes about building arks. But for some, the spring of 2010 has been anything but a laughing matter.
Some ranchers near the West Block of the Cypress Hills lost a devastating number of calves in the May snow storms.

“We lost 25,” said Heather Udal, who ranches with husband Danny next to the conglomerate cliffs.
They had six men working to try and find the calves in ...

On Friday, May 21, Leader EMS personnel staged a bicycle-car accident at 11:30 a.m. – fittingly across from a playground.
The production was part of EMS Week, a North American event held annually to raise public awareness of EMS services, encourage safety and to recognize the hard work of EMS professionals.
RCMP attended the street stage, blocking off access to traffic as EMS brought one young actor to the hospital, while another was placed in a body bag.
The somber news spread through town by noon, with many residents unaware the scene was ...
